Stroll out the front door of Hotel Nice and you’ll be in the heart of shopping. A few more steps takes you into the historic center of the city and you’ll discover one the oldest towns in all of Catalonia.
Carrer Canonges and its surrounding alleys and streets are cobbled with ancient stones and lined with hand-hewn stone arches. Listen for the singing canaries in the windows of private homes. Many of these have window boxes that overflow with vibrant flowers. Wander until you end up at the spectacular Cathedral of Segle XII - the only Romanesque Cathedral in Catalonia. Tucked inside the walls of the Cathedral are a peaceful cloister and a museum with a stunning collection of art and specimens of past centuries. Make sure to purchase an inexpensive ticket so that you can see it all.
If you are here on a Tuesday or a Saturday, you will not want to miss the huge Outdoor Market with native products and fresh offerings of fruits, vegetables, spices, mushrooms gathered in the mountains, meats, and hand crafted cheeses & vermouth.
Just below old-town, down near the river, is the Segre Olympic Whitewater Park. It is an engineering feat with canals of calm water and whitewater. Take a morning stroll on the paved sidewalk around the canal and listen for the 8-o-clock bells from the cathedral. Or, do the same in the evening … when the bells ring 12 hours later.
Feeling more adventurous? Book a rafting trip on the whitewater channel. You will paddle the exact course that hosted the 1992 Olympic Games Canoe & Kayak competition. You’ll see athletes training on this competition course as they prepare for their own high-level sporting contests.
